ANHD is excited to announce the start of recruitment for the tenth cycle of the Center for Neighborhood Leadership’s Community Organizer Apprenticeship Program. The Center for Neighborhood Leadership trains the next generation of community leaders and increases the capacity of grassroots organizations to win concrete changes for communities. The Organizing Apprenticeship is a rigorous ten month, five day per week training and educational program for new and emerging neighborhood organizers, civic engagement specialists and leaders. Apprentices spend four days per week working at a host site, and one day per week in training. The Apprenticeship is New York City based and focused, and is conducted in partnership with Public Allies New York (PANY). This means that participation in the CNL Apprenticeship will also constitute participation in the Public Allies program, giving apprentices and hosts access to the benefits of both programs. It also means that apprentices and hosts will need to comply with the requirements and rules of both organizations in order to successfully complete the program.

 Program Benefits

  • Apprentice will receive a minimum monthly stipend of $1700 plus fully paid health insurance for the ten month term.
  • Apprentice will get ten months of intensive, high quality training and formal instruction regarding how to create and sustain positive community change and on how to build a career pathway as a community change specialist.
  • Apprentice will have access to child care benefits, food stamps, health insurance, interest-free student loan deferments, and up to $5,750 in an education award to pay back student loans or pay for future education. Now moving into its tenth year, CNL has a 90% success rate in graduating to post-secondary education and/or permanent employment.  
  • Each Apprentice who successfully completes the program will have access to an educational grant via Public Allies.

Program Requirements

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age by the start of the apprenticeship (September 2018).
  • Applicants must meet all US work requirements.
  • Applicants need to be able to work a minimum of 42 hours/week during a five day week for the duration of the ten month term. Monday to Thursdays will be full time works days at the Apprentice’s worksite with almost all Fridays during the term being a full day of training and/or formal instruction with CNL and/or PANY. Although there will be some evening and weekend work, most weekends are work free.
  • The program is required to request disclosure of criminal convictions and conduct a criminal background check. However, a criminal conviction history does NOT mean automatic rejection or dismissal from the program. The background check happens after candidates are accepted; it is not a part of the selection process. If you are interested in the program and have a criminal conviction, you are still encouraged to apply; program staff will help you navigate the process in a manner that will protect both your privacy and dignity to the greatest extent possible.
