Founded in 1966, UPROSE is Brooklyn’s oldest Latino community-based organization. An intergenerational, multi-racial, nationally-recognized grassroots organization, UPROSE promotes the sustainability and resiliency of Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood through community organizing, public advocacy, popular education, leadership development. UPROSE has achieved multiple groundbreaking accomplishments in environmental justice, community-based planning, and public health initiatives, from waterfront development and brownfields remediation advocacy, to transportation, open space and air quality improvement, to educational and youth empowerment campaigns.
UPROSE works with community members and institutions, governmental agencies, technical assistance partners, and private stakeholders to advance a just transition away from fossil fuels and toward regenerative energy. UPROSE seeks an Energy Justice Coordinator to facilitate the organization’s renewable energy development and policy work. This will include coordinating community-based energy planning efforts; the development of community-owned solar to Sunset Park; coordinating research into financial and legal models; advocacy for just energy policy and regulatory frameworks; and supporting community-led implementation strategies.
This is a full time position that provides a benefits package and professional development opportunities. Candidates must be able to work in a flexible schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and occasional travel.
- Report directly to Infrastructure Coordinator
· Manage and maintain multiple renewable energy projects and relationships – including community members, consultants, property owners, governmental entities, and other stakeholders
· Identify new project sites and manage project development
· Engage in community-based energy planning efforts to identify local community priorities
· Lead community education workshops around project benefits and opportunities
- Effectively collaborate with third party project technical assistants and coalition members
- Contribute to grant-writing as needed to support project development
- Engage in ongoing policy campaigns and coalition building efforts aimed at moving towards 100% renewables
- Demonstrated commitment to working for environmental, social, and climate justice
· Minimum of 2-3 years professional experience relevant to the renewable energy sector, including energy development, project management, regulatory affairs, and policy
· Applied understanding of energy development finance and legal
· Proven experience in coordinating meetings and working with grassroots intergenerational communities of color
- Ability to work independently or in a collaborative team-setting
- Excellent personal organization and time management skills with attention to detail and the ability to multi-task
- Understanding of city, state, and federal energy policy landscape
- Knowledge of basic computer applications, such as word processing, presentation software, spreadsheets, e-mail, and social networks
- Comfort giving public presentations
