OPEIU is looking for a progressive individual interested in a position in the labor movement.
Since 1945, Office and Professional Employees International Union, Local 153 has been organizing in the New York City area and now represents 16,000 workers in a diverse number of industries.
The position we are seeking to fill is for a person with energy who is more interested in the welfare of members than looking at a clock. The primary duties are to process member grievances, organize the unorganized and conduct individual and group meetings with workers to update them on activities in the workplace.
Bilingual in English/Spanish is preferred. Good listening, oral and written communication skills, basic computer literacy and ability to work well with a team. Willingness to work with members from diverse ethnic groups and knowledge of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) is required. Work experience in the labor movement either as a volunteer, shop steward, delegate or union representative is preferred.
Good salary and benefits include fully paid health insurance, pension and 401(k) plans, liberal holidays, vacations and sick time. Based on experience, the hiring rate ranges from $50,000 – $65,000.
